Description and Quirks
Tóki is of a somewhat odd Asian-European descent and has a smoky dark skin and naturally thick black hair reaching down to his shoulders that he simply lets fall where it wishes. He's decided to routinely dye it with white streaks, visually ageing him up to something close to fifty. As he sometimes gets carried away by projects enough to forget to eat, he struggles a little to keep his weight - he pays extra attention to getting enough calories, picking the fattiest foods he can get away with. He loves eating plain butter, but shuns cream. While not a fussy eater, he rejects some things based on their texture and, while he enjoys the taste of milk products, his metabolism reacts badly to them.
Owed to the combination of dark skin and a habit of keeping indoors constantly, Tóki naturally has zero vitamin D in his bloodstream and takes vitamin D supplements. Just to be sure, he also takes vitamin B12 supplements, because he heard that there's no real overdosing with them, but a deficiency can be tricky to spot, and he'll pop in a zinc lozenge each time he thinks he might be coming down with a respiratory illness, in the belief that it'll boost his immune system.
Tóki wears glasses that are slightly the wrong size for him, but refuses to get them fixed, because he's very fond of the unusually narrow shape of the frame, which are not on file for 3D printing. Since he's been wearing said frame for years, it's likely to spontaneously break at some point; its arms are only made of plastic. He has to hold onto his glasses when he leans too far forward, lest they slip down his face - they don't quite fall off, but end up hanging more on his lips than his nose.
Tóki is a learned bio-engineer, having worked on some counter-agents to early weaponised pathogens at the pharmaceutical company he was employed at, but was misassigned for his cryosleep location, unable to work well alone, far too riddled with a sense of imposter syndrome to feel like he could uphold the standards of his craft without a team of likewise trained individuals to back him up. Ever since the Outpost managed to handle the Fade quite well without his contributions (which he was fervently working on, having a sense of obligation toward his peers, but in a fit of bad luck ultimately ended up being the completely wrong direction to combat the problem), he's become especially convinced that he should stay out of the subject.
Instead, he has taken an obsessive interest in the outpost's infrastructure. While acknowledging that the robots are there to fix things up, Tóki will nonetheless introduce himself as a janitor, a network engineer or an electrician, depending on what the situation requires. He is a bit of a jack of all trades. On the one hand, he's rather decent at nearly everything he tries his hand in (with a bit of ramp up time and obsessive learning interlaced with whatever he's finishing up first), but on the other, he has no particular talent, except maybe the bio-engineering he's presently decided to stop doing.
Tóki loves visitors, but rarely goes out of his way to interact with anyone in the Outpost, too busy talking to the robots and going about his exploration and maintenance habits. On most days, when someone does encounter him, he is very energetic, coming across as bubbly, to those who don't know him yet even quite silly, and will enthusiastically talk someone's ear off about anything they seem not to mind him rambling on about.
When he's not interacting with people, he's listening to audiobooks (typically not dedicated but automatically generated, from the text) of fiction (science fiction) and non-fiction (IT, physics, psychology, and his less practical but very pronounced hobby: the occult).
With the lack of tight social feedback loops, Tóki gets lost in occult topics sometimes. He takes it very seriously and draws a clear delineation between 'obvious claptrap' and what he considers very real effects. He's not lost his marbles - most of what he believes works is simply applied psychology, such as the tangible effects of rituals on the human psyche - but he is certainly more prone to certain bizarre superstitions than just about anyone else on the outpost. He routinely draws occult symbols on server room walls in the belief that it calms the machines, which he will defend as “I don't know why it works, but it does”, and have a dozen anecdotal stories that seem to defend his claim (usually, these are simple coincidences in timing, plus a bit of selection bias).
Despite his isolation, Tóki thinks his fellow humans are great. Unless it conflicts with something he knows is true, or is said in an obvious joking tone, he will take whatever people tell him at face value.
Tóki has bonded especially closely with a Muska Felo he's named Nyyrikki (despite the name, the Felo is female), whom he feeds perhaps a bit too much, and who rewards him for all this attention by following Tóki around everywhere. Occasionally he thinks he can get Nyyrikki to do something for him, which only works about 20% of the time, given how much the feline simply enjoys lounging in the warm exhaust of the servers she can effortlessly slip behind.
